For those interested in submitting their candidacy, the deadline is September 8, 2020. You can submit up to seven business days prior to the deadline (August 27-September 4).

The Notice of Poll lists the candidates running in the 2020 Municipal Election. 

Advance Poll Information

Advance Polls for the Town of Antigonish Municipal Election are located at the Antigonish Market Square. The polls are open to all eligible voters in the Town of Antigonish. 

Advance Polls will be open:

  • October 8, 2020 from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • October 13, 2020 from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Eligible voters are encouraged to take advantage of online voting. Online voting is the best risk-free option to avoid lines and crowds at the polling stations. By participating in online voting residents can use their own devices at home or work to cast their ballot.  Online voting is available from 12 a.m. midnight on October 8, 2020 until October 17, 2020 at 7 p.m. 

Eligible voters will receive a letter in the mail with instructions on how to vote online and in person.Those who wish to cast their ballot online will receive information via mail with your voter instructions.

Who Can Run?

To be a candidate in the 2020 election, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Must be a Canadian CitizenMust be 18 years of age at the time of nomination.
  • Must be a resident of the Town of Antigonish for a period of six (6) months before nomination and continue to so reside.
  • Must have the charges that are liens on your property and taxes due to the Town fully paid by nomination day.
  • Must not be disqualified under the Municipal Elections Act

Who Can Vote?

Anyone who meets the following requirements is eligible to vote in the 2020 Municipal Election:

  • You are 18 years of age or older and a Canadian citizen on the first advance polling day.
  • You have been a resident in Nova Scotia for six (6) months immediately before the first polling day.
  • You are a resident of the Town of Antigonish and have been so since immediately before the first advance polling day.
  • You are not otherwise disqualified to vote in the Municipal Elections

Am I On The Voters List?

The preliminary list of electors has been prepared. The Returning Officer may make additions or corrections to the lists upon application by phone, text, email or in person. 

Electors may find out if they are on the list of Electors by:

  • Visiting Town Hall between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. from September 1-4, 2020.

  • Texting or phoning the Returning Officer at 902-318-0067.

Who is Disqualified?

Those individuals who would be considered disqualified to vote in the 2020 Election, include:

  • The Returning Officer.
  • A person serving a sentence in a penal or reform institution.
  • A person who has been convicted of bribery under the Municipal Elections Act in the six (6) years preceding ordinary polling day.

 When Can You Vote?

The Town of Antigonish will be providing three (3) options for Electors to vote.

  1. Internet voting will be open at 8:00 am October 8, 2020 until 7:00 pm on October 17, 2020. The poll will be open 24 hours a day for ten days. You will receive a letter in the mail with your PIN and instructions on how to vote.
  2. Telephone voting is also available. You will receive a letter in the mail with instructions on how to vote by telephone.
  3. You can cast a regular ballot on either Advance Poll Day or on Election Day.

Election Day Polls will be held at the Dr. John Hugh Gillis High School Gymnasium on Saturday, October 17, 2020 from 8:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.

Please bring a photo I.D. and your Voter Information Letter to the poll.

What About Advanced Polls?

Advance Polls will be located at the Town of Antigonish Election Office at the Antigonish Market Square on October 8, 2020 from 12:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. 

The second advance poll will be held at the Town of Antigonish Election Officer at Antigonish Market Square on October 13, 2020 from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.
