Dr. JJ Carroll Awards

A legacy for youth sports in Antigonish

Awards applications welcome every autumn, announced online and in the news.

Dr. JJ Carroll was a beloved member of the community in Antigonish. From the book The History of Antigonish, by Dr. Patrick F. Walsh:

"There was a day when doctors knew best, and patients accepted without question what they said. The only complaint ever heard about Dr. J.J. Carroll from his patients who loved him dearly was that he was quiet, and didn't say a great deal.

"Jim Carroll was an example of all of 'grace in action.' Behind it all lay a tremendous reverence for the dignity of people: he never gave any of his patients less than his best.

"Dr. J.J. Carroll was not an organizer, he was not a builder, but he was nonpareil."

Although Dr. Carroll might not have been an organizer, he certainly thought ahead to an impact he could have in his community for many years to come. The Dr. JJ Carroll Awards grant financial support for sports for youth, as laid out by his Last Will and Testament:

(1) For the purpose of providing instruction for juniors (young people) in the Town of Antigonish in the areas of minor hockey, swimming and track and field. In the event that the income from the estate allocated for this purpose cannot be used, then the funds may be made available to promote the physical fitness and general good health of young people in the Town of Antigonish.

(2) The Town has constituted the J.J. Carroll Awards Committee will make the recommendations to the Town Council of Antigonish respecting the granting of awards

(3) Awards will be granted to persons or organizations that are eligible under the terms of the Last Will and Testament. It is suggested that applicants show that the award will be used to foster innovative programs in the area of minor hockey instruction, swimming instruction, and track and field instruction.
