Continuing the Spine of the Active Transportation Trail
Since awarding the tender to B.D. Clifton, the Town and the contractor have been finalizing preparations for the first day of on-the-ground work on Monday, July 20.
Extending the Active Transportation (AT) Trail along the length of St. Ninian Street will add approximately 700 metres to the Active Transportation network through the Town of Antigonish and provide an accessible pathway that continues the existing AT Trail from West Street that connects to the AT Spine Trail along the Old Highway. Work for the east end of the Trail is also nearly complete as part of the Bay Street Project.
Timeline
Work is designed to happen in two sections to limit impacts to traffic and pedestrians.
Mid July until late August: Highland Drive to College Street
Late August until Mid September: College Street to Church Street
Neighbourhood plan
The Town has been in contact with property owners and residents along the impacted side of St. Ninian Street, and the contractors have planned signage to safely direct pedestrians to navigate the construction zone. Traffic control is planned to avoid stop and go traffic whenever possible, and will include one-way traffic along St. Ninian Street from College Street to Cairn Park for part of the project. For some weeks, drivers might choose to use the Old Highway or Main Street as alternate routes to avoid the construction area.
