The Town of Antigonish is pleased to announce that a contract has been signed with CBCL Limited for the design and oversight of significant upgrades to the Antigonish Sewage Treatment Plant (STP). This initiative is valued at $464,850 plus HST and will improve the plant’s efficiency and sustainability by addressing key operational challenges.
The project will focus on the installation of a new front-end screening system and headworks, enhancing the existing infrastructure at the STP located at 2 East Main Street. This upgrade aims to reduce maintenance costs and improve the effectiveness of the aeration process by preventing organic material buildup that has historically led to increased cleaning requirements and equipment strain. Additionally, the project will eliminate odour issues caused by a lack of oxygen at the front end of the aerated lagoon, ensuring a more pleasant environment for nearby residents.
CBCL Limited, a trusted engineering consultant, has been tasked with designing, tendering, and overseeing the construction of the screening system. The proposed improvements include:
- Installation of a state-of-the-art screening system with perforated panel screens.
- Construction of a new building to house screening equipment, aeration blowers, office, and lab space.
- Additional aeration equipment to enhance plant operations.
- Integration of standby power to ensure continued functionality during outages.
- Inclusion of flow monitoring for incoming wastewater to optimize processing.
Funding for the project has been secured through the Municipal Capital Growth Program (MCGP) and municipal budgets. The upgrades will address long-standing operational issues, including excessive debris accumulation and oxygen depletion, which have impacted plant performance.
