Work complete on the Sewage Treatment Plant's new aerators
The first day of work on July 30 went forward during a significant rainfall, as Town staff changed out the valves of the old aerators to enable the team from Nexom to prepare for their installation.
Over the following days, Nexom installed the four new aerator chains with minor planned disruptions to the overall aerator activity as they brought the new aerators online. These chains maintain higher airflow capacity than what was previously possible at the Plant and continuously deliver oxygenated air through the water column, from where the aerators are suspended up to the water's surface.
The images below illustrate the difference in activity at the water's surface between mid-July 2026 and once the new aerators were installed in early August 2026.
July 17 2026 The upper image has much less activity at the surface, partly due to lower capacity aerators, but also due to clogging caused by non-biodegradable waste entering the lagoon.
August 5 2026 The lower image shows optimal aerator activity at the surface. It is even, consistent, and will be easier to maintain as higher capacity aerators are designed to resist clogging by non-biodegradables, and will have a large rental blower powering them in the coming weeks.
Rented Blower will support our new aerators in the warmest months
Following the successful installation the new aerators, the Sewage Treatment Plant also received our rental blower. This blower will deliver even more oxygenated air to our new higher capacity aerators, further improving the efficiency of the breakdown of waste at the Sewage Treatment Plant.
Installation of the rented blower will take a few days, but results so far with the new aerators have been promising. With a few days of heat warnings in the forecast, Town staff are all hands on deck making sure everything is working in tandem to keep odour as low as possible, although some odour might still be detectable. Measures to keep the Plant working effectively and reduce odours include the new recirculation system, the newly installed aerators, and our ongoing use of deodorizers, among others.
