PUBLIC NOTICE: Main St./College St. Intersection - UPDATE

On Saturday morning, May 27, traffic lights at the intersection of Main Street and College Street were struck by a pulp truck turning onto Main from College. The traffic light standard and mast arm were dragged down the street, and underground wiring was pulled from its locations in the post base and control panel.

Where the traffic lights were heavily damaged, an assessment for repairs and an alternative traffic management solution is underway. Delivery of replacement and temporary components is currently being assessed, with several weeks or more possibly required until the intersection can be restored to normal.

Until the traffic lights can be rebuilt, or made partially operational, the intersection should be approached by motorists as an ‘ALL STOP’. Temporary stops signs are placed at intersection corners. Under these conditions, motorists must yield the right-of-way to the first vehicle to come to a complete stop, or If two vehicles stop at the same time, the vehicle on the left must yield to the vehicle on the right.

Motorists should approach the intersection at reduced speeds, stopping as noted and watching for all pedestrian crossings, who will now have granted right of way under these conditions. Pedestrians are asked to exercise caution when crossing in this area.

Please monitor our website, www.townofantigonish.ca, and social media for further information as it becomes available.

 UPDATE (May 30, 2017):

Contractors were onsite yesterday to assess conditions. Staff are awaiting the report for required repairs and/or replacements.

In the meantime, the remaining traffic lights at the intersection have been made operational to allow near normal movements, and the temporary stops signs and the All Stop conditions has been removed.
