The role of the Public Works, Electrical, Facilities and Engineering Department is to provide essential engineering, operations, and maintenance services for the benefit of the citizens, businesses, institutions, and visitors of the Town of Antigonish.The Department is responsible for the daily administration, supervision, and maintenance of Town of Antigonish infrastructure including electrical maintenance, sewer and water distribution, water treatment and facility maintenance, wastewater treatment and facility maintenance, and residential waste collection programs.
Public works is a diverse department, with many key divisions:
- Public Works is responsible for maintaining town streets, sidewalks and parking lots, water distribution network maintenance, wastewater distribution maintenance, and ensuring that heavy equipment such as a street sweeper, backhoe, sidewalk plow, snow plow, and other equipment is kept in good working order. The maintenance of Town streets includes pot-hole patching, concrete sidewalk maintenance, street cleaning, signage, and winter snow removal.
- The Electrical Utility is responsible for the maintenance of Town Electrical infrastructure such power poles, power lines, and transformers, traffic lights, light standards, etc., and provide services such as electrical connection and disconnection.
- The Water Treatment and Sewer Treatment Facilities is responsible for the treatment and monitoring of town water and wastewater and maintenance of the water and sewer treatment plants and equipment as per the requirements of the regulations and approvals of the Nova Scotia Department of Environment.
- The Engineering Office provides engineering services such as design, construction supervision and contract administration of infrastructure and development projects approved by Town Council such as paving of Town streets, sidewalk work including curb and gutter, stormwater drainage piping, and catch basin upgrades, water main and sewer main upgrades and service connections, and environmental compliance and reporting for water utility and wastewater treatment facilities; management and maintenance of facilities and electrical utility and coordination of residential solid waste collection all as per regulations and approval of the Nova Scotia Department of Environment and the statutory requirements of the Town Engineer under the Nova Scotia Municipal Government Act.
